John 1:4

The Source Advent john 1-4

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Yesterday we were thinking about our favourite supermarket Christmas advert. And when I think about supermarkets, food springs to mind! We need food - not just at Christmas but each day of our lives. Food is the fuel that helps us do things, to replenish our bodies after spending energy, to give our brains power to think and do something creative, to move from A to B.

However, life can often feel a bit like going from A to B week in, week out: go to school, drive to the office, come home, eat dinner, all on repeat play mode. We all find ourselves at some point doing the ‘same old, same old’ - not exactly an energising or attractive pattern to us or to others.

I don’t think this is the life that God had in mind when He made us. I don’t think He made us to eat, drink and sit at a desk on repeat. This passage describes life as the light of all people - you and me - but what does that mean?

Ultimately it means finding the purpose for your life as God made you to be. Finding your purpose and then doing something meaningful with it. And this looks different for every one of us, depending on who you are and where you find yourself.

It might be finding fulfillment in the right job that God has for you; raising a family and investing in your children; giving time to serve others or volunteering some of your time.

When we find God’s purpose for our lives and live it out, the life of God shines in us; it’s hard not to miss someone who is completely living for God!

PROMPT: Is there an area of your life that you would rather stay hidden? Tell God and ask what He would have you do with it. Are there things (e.g. skills, experiences) in your life you’re not sure what to do with? Offer them to God and ask how they can be used to help others or make a difference.
