John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

the source derby advent John 1-5

Can you remember God’s first words in the Bible?

“Let there be light!”

At this time of year when the evenings get darker earlier, we notice darkness and light much more. Sometimes we like darkness in the room when we want to sleep, others of us might lie awake waiting for the morning to come.

But when light comes, just as when God spoke light into the darkness at the beginning of creation, it always overpowers darkness. Darkness can’t win - from the tiniest crack of light in a keyhole to the brightest sunshine coming through a window. Light helps us to find lost objects, read words clearly, to see what’s broken or hurt.

Jesus said “I am the Light of the world”. Not just a handy torch on a phone to find lost keys - a light that reveals the world’s brokenness but also shows the way back to the God who created light in the first place.

This Advent we anticipate light coming and we remember that when it comes, it won’t be overcome by darkness.

PROMPT: Spend a moment thinking about the last few days and remember a moment when you felt ‘in the dark’. Perhaps fear, uncertainty or lies you have been thinking about, or maybe your own words or actions which have left a ‘shadow’ on someone.

Listen to ‘Illuminate’ by the Source Collective and use it as a prayer of invitation for God to bring His Light to those places.

At some point today as you watch/read the news, you can ask for Jesus’ light to illuminate another place/person in the world, with the assurance that when it does, the darkness will be overcome.
